Graduated MB. BS. University of Lagos 1969 with Distinction in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and as best student in Obstetrics and Gynaecology as well as Paediatrics.

Won Janet Kirk Patrick Gold Medal in Paediatrics as well as E. W. L Thompson prize (cash) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Obtained post graduate qualifications, as Commonwealth scholar, from Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London (Member 1974, Fellow 1988); University of Lagos (Doctor of Medicine 1983); National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria (Fellow,1978); West African College of Surgeons (Fellow, 1979); Academy of Science (Fellow, 2004).

Pioneer Head, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department (1980); Professor (1990), Provost College of Health Sciences, University of Port Harcourt 1993-1995 and then 1996-1998; Vice-Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt (2000 -2005, acting 1995-1996, 2000, January – July.). Chairman, Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (2004 – 2005).

Chairman, Boards of National Hospital, Abuja (2006); Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (2007); Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria 1996-1999); Rivers State Economic Advisory Council (2007); University of Benin Teaching Hospital (2008). Internal examiner at the various examinations of the National Post Graduate Medical College and the West African College of Surgeons in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. For several years, external examiner in final MB examinations in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to several universities in Nigeria and also the University of Ghana. Treasurer National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria (1999-2001); Secretary General society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON); Merit Award, National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria (2004).

Over 60 keynote and invited lectures; over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles; ten books. Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Lagos. National Honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2004). Appointed Professor Emeritus of the University of Port Harcourt (2012). Reviewer for several journals including the Lancet. SOGON Award for Excellence in Administration (2015).

International Adviser, Annals of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (1993).
